“The thyroid is one of the endocrine glands in your body that controls your metabolism.”

It is located on the lower part of the neck. Thyroid disorders can be diagnosed by blood test and ultrasound. When your thyroid is not producing enough thyroid hormone, it is called hypothyroidism. The most common cause of hypothyroidism is autoimmune disorder. Common symptoms include fatigue, weakness, weight gain, dry skin, and cold intolerance. This condition can be easily treated with a thyroid replacement. When your thyroid is producing too much hormone, it is called hyperthyroidism. The most common cause of hyperthyroidism is Graves’ disease which is also an autoimmune disorder. Symptoms can include palpitation, weight loss, heat intolerance, and neck swelling. This condition can be treated with medication, radioactive iodine, or surgery.

A thyroid nodule is a lump or abnormal growth within the thyroid gland. Most of the thyroid nodules are benign, but some of them can be cancerous. Thyroid nodules can be diagnosed by ultrasound. They cannot be detected by blood tests. Some of the thyroid nodules need to be biopsied based on their sizes and characteristics.
