“ It is essential to personalize their treatment plan to not only optimize diabetes control but also for their quality of life. “

Many people who live with diabetes struggle to control sugar levels despite doing their best, usually because current treatment plans are not well-fitted to each individual. Therefore, it is essential to personalize their treatment plan to not only optimize diabetes control but also for their quality of life. I usually spent more time checking their lifestyle, typical diet, preference, and capacity/adequacy and reshaping their management plan for better sugar levels.

Making blood sugar on target is the first step for preventing or delaying the onset of diabetes complications. These chronic complications, described below, progress slowly and sometimes give us a chance to catch up. Therefore, I strongly recommend seeing a diabetes specialist regularly and discussing your conditions in detail. That can allow you to undergo the subsequent screening/diagnostic process.

What are the major complications of diabetes?

Eye problems (called retinopathy)
Individuals with diabetes may experience a condition known as diabetic retinopathy, which has the potential to impact their vision. When detected, typically through an eye screening examination, you can effectively manage retinopathy to prevent vision loss.

Cardiovascular disease: Heart attack and stroke
In individuals with diabetes, prolonged elevated blood sugar levels can result in damage to their blood vessels. This damage may increase the risk of experiencing heart attacks and strokes.

Kidney problems (called nephropathy)
Over an extended period, diabetes can lead to kidney damage, resulting in difficulty clearing excess fluid and waste from the body. This condition, known as diabetic nephropathy or kidney disease, is typically caused by elevated blood sugar levels and high blood pressure.

Foot problems/Nerve damage (called neuropathy)
Elevated sugar levels may cause nerve damage and impaired blood circulation, leading to delayed healing of sores and cuts. Therefore, it is crucial to observe any changes in the appearance or sensation of your feet.

Gum disease
Gum disease and other oral health issues can arise from elevated sugar levels in the blood. Excess sugar in saliva attracts bacteria that produce acid, leading to the erosion of tooth enamel and gum damage. Additionally, the blood vessels in the gums can be compromised, increasing the risk of gum infections.

Sexual dysfunction
Impairment of blood vessels and nerves can limit blood flow to the sexual organs, resulting in decreased sensation. In men, this may lead to difficulties in achieving arousal and can result in erectile dysfunction, also known as impotence. Women may be more susceptible to thrush or urinary tract infections.
